Different types of internships

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers important, meaningful, and practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. It allows students to explore career options and to learn new abilities. Through real-world experience, it helps gain the knowledge and skills for a career field. Internships are relatively short with the focus of getting some job training.

Some different types of internships are:

· Paid Internships — Paid internships exist mainly in the private sector or in large organisations that have the money to pay students to learn while they work. Between a choice of paid or unpaid internship, paid internships are preferred. The main reason is that they offer students a way to gain knowledge and skills while making some money. The money offered can be in the form of an hourly wage, weekly salary, or stipend throughout the internship.

· Non-profit Internships — Doing an internship for a non-profit organisation is quite different than working in an organisation for profit. In a non-profit organisation, there are no owners. Non-profit organisations focus more on providing a service rather than making money. Interns generally do not get paid when interning under this kind of internship.

· Credit Internship — A credit internship is a special intern program that provides an experience strongly related to a specific academic discipline. The internship is supposed to be ‘credit-worthy’. Credit-worthy means one would receive university credits for completing this kind of internship. Therefore, such internships are usually a part of university coursework or a class.

· Summer Internships — Summer internships are usually eight to twelve weeks long and can be full or part-time. It lasts during the class-free summer months between school years. These short-term internships provide an understanding of what it’s like working in a job or career field. Summer internships can be completed for credit as well and maybe either paid or unpaid.

· Virtual Internship — A virtual internship or an online internship is an internship program that does not require physical presence to participate. A virtual internship may be perfect for jobs where all work is online, such as in IT, digital marketing, content writing, etc.

The variety of internships today allows students the opportunity to choose from what best suits their needs and requirements. Such internships help gain professional experience at a very early stage and therefore boost one’s skill set to give an edge over other students.
